A 35-year-old woman has admitted attempting to smuggle marijuana and suki into the Naboro Correctional Facility for her stepbrother Shalend Kumar, an inmate serving a prison sentence.

Adi Vuniasi Waqanitoga pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful entry of prohibited articles into a correctional facility and one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs. 

She appeared before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad this morning. 

The court heard that the incident occurred on May 30 when Waqanitoga visited the prison.

During a search at the facility, corrections 

officers became suspicious of a toothpaste tube she was carrying. 

The tube was cut open, revealing dried green leaves believed to be marijuana and suki wrapped individually in plastic.

The seized drugs were later sent for forensic analysis, which confirmed the substance was cannabis weighing 2.5 grams.

Magistrate Prasad noted the serious consequences of drugs entering correctional facilities, saying contraband could contribute to violence and disorder among inmates.

He also questioned why Waqanitoga had put herself at risk for someone serving a lengthy sentence.

Waqanitoga has been further remanded in custody and the matter has been adjourned to 1st September for sentencing.
