The FIFA World Cup group stage continued to deliver plenty of excitement overnight, with the Netherlands producing one of the performances of the tournament so far while Group E remained finely balanced heading into its final round of matches.

In Group F, the Netherlands sent a strong message to the rest of the competition after dismantling Sweden 5-1.

Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both scored braces as the Dutch overwhelmed Sweden with their attacking quality and moved into a commanding position to qualify for the knockout stages.

Sweden managed a late consolation goal, but the result leaves them facing a must-win clash against Japan in their final group match.

Meanwhile, Group E remained wide open after Germany and Ivory Coast played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Germany were unable to replicate the attacking fireworks of their opening 7-1 victory over Curaçao, while Ivory Coast showed their defensive resilience once again to secure a valuable point in the race for qualification.

Elsewhere, Ecuador faced a crucial encounter against Curaçao knowing that points were essential to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.

The result leaves the group delicately poised ahead of the final round, where all four teams remain in contention for progression.

With the tournament approaching the halfway mark of the group stage, several traditional powerhouses are beginning to stamp their authority on the competition, while a number of underdogs continue to challenge expectations in what is proving to be an unpredictable World Cup.
