Students from Yat Sen Secondary School gained first-hand insight into Fiji’s governance and history during a field trip to State House yesterday.

Year 10 Social Science students and senior History students, accompanied by Principal Mrs. Raijeli Sikivou and Head of Social Science Department Ms. Vika Savu, were warmly welcomed by the President of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

The visit aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the significance of State House and the constitutional role of the Head of State.

During his address, President Lalabalavu encouraged the students to take an active interest in national history and leadership.

“As future leaders, you have a responsibility to learn, to question, and to lead with honesty, compassion, and respect,” he said.

In an interactive session, students asked questions about the President’s constitutional role, his experiences across different leadership positions, and how the three arms of government – the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary – interact under Fiji’s Constitution.

Reflecting on his past roles, President Lalabalavu noted the distinct responsibilities he held as Leader of the Opposition, Speaker of Parliament, and now as Head of State, emphasizing that each role served the nation in different but significant ways.

The students also toured the historic State House, learning about its architecture, legacy, and role in Fiji’s political development.

Concluding the visit, President Lalabalavu urged the students to value education as a gateway to building a stronger Fiji.

“Education opens doors to opportunity and empowers you to contribute meaningfully to our country’s development. You are the future of Fiji – lead with integrity,” he said.
