Permanent Secretary for Local Government Seema Sharma informed residents of Navua during a consultation that declaring Navua a town will give residents a stronger voice in shaping the area’s future, with a dedicated local council based in the community.

Speaking during the Navua town declaration consultation, Sharma said residents will no longer have to rely on the Lami Town Council, as Navua will have its own administration focused on addressing local issues and planning future development.

“So, right now, you depend on Lami Town Council to be able to address your issues. So, now, with being a declared town, you will have a council that is based here in Navua. You have your own people who represent you”.

Initially, there will be an appointed administration until the elections happen for councillors to come in. But we would want people who are from Navua to be part of this administration, knowing your needs” Sharma highlighted.

Sharma added that the council will work closely with residents, allowing them to raise concerns directly while helping guide infrastructure planning and future budgets.

She also assured residents that government agencies have already begun preparing for Navua’s transition to town status, with systems being put in place to manage development and environmental issues.

“You have a council that will be regularly meeting you and asking you what your needs are”.

“You have five-year and 10-year strategic plans where you, as residents, will be able to contribute to that strategic plan to say what are your needs and what should be put in the strategic plan in terms of the development of the town.”

Sharma says the move will ensure residents know where to take their concerns while creating a more structured approach to planning, infrastructure and services as Navua continues to grow.
