The 2023 International Youth Day theme this year: “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World,” aims at empowering and fostering the growth of the country’s young generation.

A pre-celebration for International Youth Day was held in the Western Division with the launch of a Youth Career Fair yesterday (03.08.23).

While speaking at the event held at Nadi Civic Centre, the Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Jese Saukuru highlighted the pressing challenges that confronted the world today, such as climate change, environmental degradation, and the depletion of natural resources.

However, he emphasised that these difficulties presented an opportunity for true potential to shine through. Minister Saukuru shared a vision that places youth at the forefront of combating these challenges by cultivating green skills, paving the way toward a sustainable world.

“Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World” urges young individuals to acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to thrive sustainably. It encourages them to innovate, develop new technologies, and incorporate sustainable practices into their lives.

Minister Saukuru emphasised that youth are not only future leaders but leaders of today, entrusted with the task of preserving the planet for future generations.

He commended the youth of Fiji for their dedication and commitment to protecting the environment. Noting their efforts in leading beach clean-up campaigns and advocating for renewable energy, he expressed appreciation for their relentless efforts, unwavering determination, and unyielding spirit.

The Youth Career Fair for the Western Division offers a platform for young people to explore various green career opportunities. It will facilitate meetings between aspiring individuals and organisation representatives committed to sustainability. The fair aims to foster the exchange of ideas, provision of mentorship, and transformation of dreams into reality.

Minister Saukuru encouraged young minds to make the most of this opportunity by engaging with the exhibitors present at the career fair. He urged them to explore the possibilities within the realm of green skills, be curious, and proactive in shaping their futures. The fair provides valuable knowledge and networking opportunities that can propel youth toward success in sustainable industries.

He also stressed the importance of creating an empowering environment for Fiji’s youth, emphasising the need for investment in education, access to resources, and the necessary tools to navigate future challenges. He called for unity and determination in creating a sustainable world where youth can thrive, and future generations can flourish.

At the celebration, Minister Saukuru reminded attendees of their responsibility towards the environment. He highlighted that every individual action, regardless of its size, contributes to the collective goal of sustainability. He expressed confidence that armed with green skills and a passion for change, young minds will lead Fiji towards a brighter and greener future.

The Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Hon. Sashi Kiran was also present at the event.
