A 5-year-old girl from Naituvatuvavatu Village in Wainibuka was swept away by strong currents while crossing the Waisomi River yesterday.
The incident occurred as she, her 32-year-old aunt, and seven other children were returning from gathering edible lady fern. The matter was reported to police by the Turaga ni Koro of Naituvatuvavatu Village.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu confirmed that three police officers were dispatched to assist in the search yesterday. However, the operation was called off due to poor visibility and unfavorable weather conditions. The search is set to continue today.
ACPO Driu stressed the importance of parental supervision, particularly during the school holiday period.
“Parents need to be more responsible and vigilant with their children during this school break. They need to spend more time with their children and not at gatherings,” he said.
