Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua says any changes to the Constitution must be lawful.
In his New Year’s message, Tikoduadua says the subject of amendments to the constitution have been in the public discourse lately.
He adds the constitution is the supreme law of Fiji, the government, the courts of justice and our rights are provided for in the constitution.
Tikoduadua reiterates that any changes will require careful consideration, thorough debate in Parliament, and most importantly, the consensus of the Fijian people through a referendum.
This process ensures that constitutional amendments are not only lawful but also reflect the collective will and best interests of our nation.
He adds a mature conversation on the subject is necessary so that the Fijian people not only take account of where we are but most importantly where we are going.
