Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru reveals his plans to improve and elevate Fiji’s performance in the next Pacific Games.
Given the inconsistent performance of Team Fiji at the Pacific Games, Saukuru states that the results depend on the performance of individual sports and that the government can only assist in funding.
“The results depend on the performance of individual sports. The government can only assist with funding allocated to each sport that applies for the development and travel to international events, says Saukuru.
Team Fiji collected 21 gold, 30 Silver and 40 bronze at last year’s Pacific Games; 25 medals less than at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.
Saukuru adds that they are working with the Fiji National Sports Commission to identify how they can better develop and equip athletes for international competitions.
