The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has revealed that they are continuing to monitor the global situation, surrounding ‘Monkeypox’.

While responding to questions from Fiji One News, the Health Ministry says according to the World Health Organisation, ‘monkeypox’ was declared a global health emergency in May 2023, and continues to circulate in some regions including parts of Australia.

The Ministry also stated that to prevent the possibility of the disease entering Fiji’s borders, the government has laid out protocols and guidelines to be followed.

The guidelines include a routine health screening at the international border, and a 21 day incubation period.

These are set to ensure the ease of detecting the cases, although no local cases have been reported yet.

The Ministry of Health stresses the need to continue surveillance and adapt when needed however they emphasise the importance of managing stigma.
