Cabinet has approved measures to begin a review of the 2013 Constitution, including the finalisation of a Bill to amend relevant provisions of Chapter 11, which will be tabled in Parliament.

A Constitution Review Commission will be appointed to engage the public in consultations regarding potential changes.

The 2013 Constitution has faced significant criticism since its adoption, with concerns raised about both the process of its imposition and certain provisions within it.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted that constitutional reform was a key issue in the 2022 general elections, with most political parties including changes to the Constitution in their campaigns.

With Cabinet’s approval, both the Bill and the CRC will be incorporated into the Coalition Government’s Legislative Programme for 2025.

More details will be announced by the President at the opening of Parliament next month.
