Around 715 established Cooperatives in Fiji have contributed $26million in revenue and $2.5million in profits.
This was revealed during the launch of the International Year of Cooperatives 2025 in Vunimono Hall in Nausori this morning.
The event also mark the launch of the National cooperatives database, a platform that is expected to make funding applications accessible for cooperative groups in Fiji.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said that the Fijian co-operatives have acted as catalysts for socio-economic empowerment.
“In Fiji, we have seen firsthand how co-operatives transformed our lives. They empower Fijians to uplift poverty, gain financial independence and contribute to the well-being of their families and communities”, Rabuka said.
“A prime example of this is the Narocake Co-operative Limited, based in Lovu, owned by the Vanua Narocake, comprising thirteen mataqalis from three villages Lovu, Vadravadra and Yadua”, he added.
Permanent Secretary for Cooperatives Shaheen Ali said that the newly launched Cooperatives Data-base is expected to make monitoring, and evaluation convenient.
Meanwhile, the Suva Inspiring Women Market Cooperatives, has lauded the government’s assistance to making cooperatives thrive in our society.
The group is helping to address the social gap faced by market vendors in the capital.
The launch marks the beginning of a year-long celebration and reflection on the role of cooperatives in creating a more inclusive and prosperous society.
Cooperative members from as far as Navua, Vunidawa and Korovou attended the launch this morning.
