Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sitiveni Rabuka met with his Tongan counterpart, Dr. ‘Aisake Valu Eke, today on the margins of the TROIKA Leaders Meeting held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Nadi.
This was the first official bilateral engagement between the two leaders, providing an opportunity to explore stronger cooperation between Fiji and the Kingdom of Tonga, as well as wider regional engagement within the Blue Pacific framework.
Key areas of discussion included trade and investment, regional connectivity, defence and security collaboration, climate resilience, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Rabuka welcomed Dr. Eke and his delegation, expressing Fiji’s commitment to deepening bilateral and regional ties. He acknowledged Tonga’s intention to establish a full diplomatic mission in Fiji and proposed the development of a Development Cooperation Agreement (DCA) to guide future strategic partnerships.
Both leaders also discussed the “Ocean of Peace” concept as a regional framework for unity and collaboration across the Pacific.
Prime Minister Dr. Eke expressed appreciation for the meeting, noting its significance in strengthening ties and advancing shared priorities. The leaders concluded the meeting with a joint reaffirmation of their commitment to building a resilient and sustainable future for Pacific peoples.
