In a move set to deepen bilateral relations, Cabinet has approved a proposal by the Republic of the Philippines to establish a permanent embassy in Suva.
The announcement marks a significant step forward in the diplomatic relationship between the two nations, which began in 1973.
Until now, the Philippine Embassy in Wellington has overseen relations with Fiji, while Fiji’s Embassy in Jakarta manages diplomatic affairs with the Philippines.
Both nations have also maintained active Honorary Consulate Offices to facilitate cooperation.
The new embassy is expected to bolster collaboration in key areas such as labor mobility, agriculture, maritime affairs, climate change, and combating transnational crime, including drug trafficking.
This development signals a shared commitment to strengthening regional partnerships and advancing mutual priorities in the Pacific.
