The Fiji Police Force has issued a public reminder for social media users to exercise caution and responsibility when expressing themselves online, especially as investigations begin into a viral video that allegedly incites violence and spreads hate speech.
The video, shared widely across platforms, features an individual based overseas making inflammatory remarks targeting specific groups. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for thorough investigation.
“I urge social media users to exercise their freedom of speech responsibly,” said Commissioner Tudravu. “The level of cyber-bullying, harassment, and hate speech being shared is getting out of hand. It’s deeply concerning to see social media being used to create division among our communities.”
Authorities are working in collaboration with the Online Safety Commission to ensure that digital platforms are used safely and as intended- to foster connection and productive dialogue rather than conflict.
Commissioner Tudravu emphasized that while the right to freedom of expression is protected, it must be balanced with accountability and respect for others.
