Two police officers accused of sexually assaulting a minor in Savusavu earlier this month have been formally charged following a criminal investigation.

The Fiji Police Force confirmed that officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters conducted the investigation, which was later reviewed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). Upon legal consultation, both officers were charged with one count of rape each.

The accused are expected to appear at the Savusavu Magistrates Court today.

In a statement, the Fiji Police Force reiterated its commitment to due process, stating that all investigations involving police officers are handled with the utmost seriousness, particularly when official complaints are received.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the Police Force confirmed that investigations are reviewed independently and that sanctioning of charges is conducted by the ODPP.

“The Fiji Police Force is committed to ensuring the thorough conduct of investigations against police officers upon receipt of official complaints,” the statement read.

The case has drawn attention from both the public and civil society organisations calling for justice and accountability.
