The Fiji Police Force received a major boost in its maritime crime enforcement capabilities yesterday with the handover of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), an advanced underwater robotic system, through support from the Government of Japan and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Maritime Crime Programme.

The ROV, designed for tactical underwater operations, enables officers to assess potentially dangerous situations from a safe distance and detect hidden threats, such as modifications on vessel hulls that could be exploited by transnational crime syndicates.

This latest assistance aligns with UNODC’s broader goal of equipping law enforcement with modern technology to enhance operational readiness. The initiative is funded by the Embassy of Japan in Fiji, reinforcing the strong collaboration between Japan, UNODC, and Fiji’s law enforcement agencies.

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Rokuichiro Michii, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s policing efforts through the provision of resources and ongoing training. He emphasized the importance of tackling shared maritime challenges together.

UNODC Regional Programme Coordinator for the Pacific Ocean, Ms. Madushani Nawarathna, highlighted that the ROV training and equipment symbolize a long-term commitment to strengthening maritime security in the region.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu expressed the Fiji Police Force’s gratitude for the continued support from Japan and UNODC, noting that the ROV represents a strategic step towards modernising crime-fighting capabilities through advanced technology.

Thirteen officers recently completed a two-day ROV training programme funded by the Japanese Government, ensuring that the team is ready to deploy the new equipment effectively.

In addition, Ambassador Michii pledged further support for the development of the Fiji Police Waterpol base at Draunibota in Lami, signalling ongoing cooperation in strengthening Fiji’s maritime law enforcement infrastructure.
