Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has praised members of the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA) for their ongoing contribution to national development, describing them as “more than accountants” but “nation-builders.” He delivered his remarks while opening the 50th Annual FICA Congress at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Nadi this morning.
“For 53 years, FICA has helped build the architecture of modern Fiji. This isn’t just an annual gathering- we are honouring a legacy,” said the Prime Minister.
He acknowledged the organisation’s role in shaping financial governance and building trust in institutions across public and private sectors. This year’s Congress theme, “Shaping Fiji for Tomorrow’s Challenges and Opportunities,” was described as a timely call to action.
The two-day event brings together professionals from government, industry, and development partners to discuss strategies for building a resilient and inclusive economy.
Addressing key economic issues, Rabuka referenced the lingering impacts of the pandemic, climate change, and the importance of inclusive economic growth. He emphasised the role of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in national recovery and encouraged FICA’s continued involvement in MSME policy solutions.
He also urged FICA to lead in sustainability reporting and capacity-building in climate finance, particularly in embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards.
“We need accountants who understand climate risk and can guide our transition to a green economy,” he said.
Rabuka called on the profession to invest in digital transformation, upskilling, and inclusive outreach to women, youth, and rural communities.
In closing, the Prime Minister encouraged young professionals to lead with boldness and integrity.
“You are more than accountants. You are nation-builders,” he said.
