After 16 years of battling addiction and life on the streets, 28-year-old Josefa Bitu is now charting a new course; one grounded in faith, healing, and redemption.
Once consumed by drugs and alcohol, Bitu is now a participant in the Adult and Teen Challenge Fiji rehabilitation programme, where he is working toward becoming a symbol of transformation for others still trapped in the cycle of substance abuse.
Speaking candidly about his journey, Bitu said his descent into addiction began at the age of 12 under the influence of peer pressure.
“Before I came to the programme, I was both selling and using drugs. My life was a mess. I was an alcoholic, and my actions tore my family apart,” he shared.
“Many times, I left my family behind, living on the streets and forgetting my responsibilities. My wife eventually told me not to come near our children because of the chaos I brought into our home.”
After years of turmoil, Bitu said a moment of spiritual awakening led him to seek help. “I knew I was headed for a dead end. I needed prayer and support, and that’s when I found out about this programme.”
Since joining the rehabilitation centre, Bitu says his life has changed dramatically.
“The people here – the pastors, the staff, the brothers; they welcomed me with love and kindness. I finally found peace.”
Today, Bitu’s family has welcomed him back with open arms, recognising the man he is becoming.
“My message to anyone struggling is simple: there is hope. God still loves you, and He has a purpose for your life.”
Bitu is among those expected to be honoured during this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which will be observed nationwide on June 30, with main celebrations at the Suva Civic Centre.
