Government leaders are calling on students in rural communities to embrace education as a pathway to leadership and national development, as the launch of the 2026 Ratu Sukuna Day celebrations placed renewed focus on learning opportunities outside major urban centres.
Speaking at Wairuku Primary School in Rakiraki, Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu highlighted how one of Fiji’s most respected statesmen, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, began his educational journey in a small rural school setting before rising to become a national leader.
Addressing students, teachers and community members, Vasu said young people should not underestimate the opportunities available to them regardless of where they come from.
“Ratu Sukuna also began his journey in a small school like this,” he said.
“And like him, you too can dream big, work hard and become someone great for your family, your province and our beloved Fiji.”
The minister said education remains central to empowering young people and strengthening communities, stressing that learning extends beyond academic achievement.
He said schools in rural areas continue to play a critical role in producing future leaders and ensuring children have the tools needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.
This year’s Ratu Sukuna Day theme, “The Courage to Lead,” was also used to encourage students to adopt values of discipline, humility and service.
Wairuku Primary School Head of School Mr Satya said creating better learning environments for children remains essential, particularly for schools serving rural communities.
He said investments into educational facilities and resources help create opportunities for students to expand their ambitions and develop confidence.
