Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says his primary focus remains his health and legal matters, and he is yet to decide whether he will contest Fiji’s upcoming general election.

Speaking to reporters at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva this afternoon, Sayed-Khaiyum said speculation about a political comeback is premature as he continues to deal with ongoing health concerns and court proceedings.

When asked whether he intends to stand in this year’s election, Sayed-Khaiyum said his immediate priority is resolving his legal case and seeking medical treatment.

He revealed that he suffers from arrhythmia, a condition that affects the heart’s rhythm, and said he has experienced what he described as “mini-strokes” due to a low pulse rate.

Sayed-Khaiyum also said he has a blockage in his kidney which was treated in 2023 and requires further medical attention.

He claimed that applications to travel overseas for treatment have been opposed, preventing him from receiving follow-up care.

“For me, the main priority is getting healthy,” he said.

“If I’m not healthy, then I can’t do anything. I need to be healthy first of all for my wife, my children and my parents.”

Asked whether he is currently involved with any political party or group, Sayed-Khaiyum responded that he is not.

He also declined to put a timeline on when he would decide whether to contest the election, saying he would make that decision if and when the time comes.

“We’ll see what happens. I’ll cross the bridge when I come to it,” he said.

Sayed-Khaiyum served as Attorney-General and Minister for Economy under the former FijiFirst Government and remains one of the country’s most prominent political figures despite stepping away from frontline politics following the 2022 General Election.
