A significant piece of Fiji’s military heritage has been restored after the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) received a replacement copy of the Third Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (3FIR) U.S. Army XIV Corps Unit Citation during Infantry Week celebrations on yesterday.
The framed citation was formally presented by U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) Deputy Commanding General for Homeland Affairs, Major General Lance Okamura, to Commander Land Force, Brigadier General Onisivoro Covunisaqa.
The original citation was lost when the former 3FIR complex was destroyed by fire in 2021.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Maj Gen Okamura paid tribute to the 3FIR soldiers who served during World War II, highlighting their courage, commitment, and sacrifices alongside Allied forces.
He described the citation as a lasting recognition of their outstanding service, gallantry, and dedication, noting that their achievements remain a source of pride for future generations.
Accepting the award, Brig Gen Covunisaqa thanked the U.S. Army Pacific for replacing the historic document, saying it preserves an important chapter of 3FIR’s legacy.
He added that the citation not only honours the contributions of past soldiers but also reflects the strong and enduring relationship between the RFMF and the U.S. Army.
The XIV Corps Unit Citation acknowledges the distinguished combat service of 3FIR personnel during World War II, recognising a legacy of professionalism and bravery that continues to inspire soldiers today.
