Fiji scrum-half Simione Kuruvoli has been suspended for four weeks following his red card in Fiji’s heavy defeat to England last weekend, ruling him out of the upcoming Nations Championship Test against Scotland in Edinburgh.
Kuruvoli was sent off during Fiji’s 73-8 loss to England at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool after kicking out at England prop Ellis Genge as he got up from a breakdown in the 48th minute of the match.
After reviewing television footage, referee Hollie Davidson issued a permanent red card, leaving Fiji to play the remainder of the second half with 14 men.
The Nations Championship disciplinary committee found Kuruvoli guilty of “physical abuse in contravention of Law 9.12” and announced the sanction in its findings.
According to the committee, the offence warranted a mid-range entry point of eight weeks or matches. However, the suspension was reduced by 50 percent after Kuruvoli admitted the foul play and received credit for mitigating factors, including his disciplinary record, conduct and remorse.
“In light of Kuruvoli accepting he committed an act of foul play as well as mitigating factors such as his disciplinary record, conduct, and remorse, the Committee applied the full 50 per cent reduction in sanction,” the statement said.
The reduced sanction means Kuruvoli will miss Fiji’s Nations Championship clash against Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.
The suspension will also affect his club commitments with French Top 14 side RC Vannes, forcing him to sit out the opening three matches of the new season.
Kuruvoli is set to miss away fixtures against Castres Olympique as well as home matches against Montpellier and Toulouse before becoming eligible to return.
