4-year-old Jai Narayan College student and standout swimmer Grace Elizabeth Khelen has officially signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with iconic food manufacturer FMF Foods Limited.
The partnership provides essential financial and logistical backing as Khelen trains toward her long-term ambition: representing Fiji on the world stage at the Los Angeles Olympic Games.
For Khelen, the corporate backing marks a key milestone in a journey that began years ago when she first watched older swimmers and strove to emulate them.
“I started this dream when I was a little child. I saw older swimmers, they were really good, so I wanted to be like them,” Khelen shared during the official signing ceremony. “After swimming for a while, I noticed I was getting better at the sport. It encouraged me even more, and I just want to inspire other children and the youth in Fiji.”
Despite balancing high-level competitive swimming, paddling, and academics, Khelen maintains a calm outlook, attributing her balance to a strong personal foundation.
“I find it easy to manage because I have a great support system in my parents and coach. Everything just flows well.”
FMF Foods Limited Marketing Manager Maria Kumar emphasized that sponsoring Khelen aligns with the company’s vision to uplift local youth and model positive pathways.
The connection was initiated through former Miss FMF Patricia, who brought Khelen’s accomplishments to the company’s attention.
“Looking at what Grace has achieved, it is truly touching,” said Kumar. “With everything happening around the country with young people, seeing her drive is amazing. We saw a great opportunity to have her as an FMF advocate for youths to show that with willpower and parental guidance, you can head in the right direction.”
Kumar assured Khelen that FMF Foods stands firmly behind her development as she prepares for upcoming national and regional multi-sport competitions.
Khelen’s father, Michael Khelen, who also serves as Vice President of the Orca Swimming Club, expressed gratitude for the corporate partnership, describing it as a answer to years of hard work and faith.
“Everything happens in God’s time,” Michael Khelen said. “Ever since she started swimming, her ultimate goal has been the Olympics. We thank FMF for helping turn that dream into a reality. This sponsorship will greatly boost her preparations with her head coach, Esther Malani, and support her through major upcoming events.”
Under Coach Malani’s direction, Khelen will continue an intensive cross-training regimen spanning pool sessions, gym conditioning, running, and paddling to build endurance and strength for international qualifying standard attempts.
When asked where she sees herself in five years, Khelen’s answer was simple: “As an Olympian.”
Her message to aspiring young athletes across the Pacific remains straightforward: “Keep on trying, keep coming to training, and never give up.”
