Canada secured third place at the 2026 Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup after holding off a determined United States side for a 19-16 victory in a closely contested playoff match.

The Canadians made an ideal start, crossing first through Ben Lesage, with Takoda McMullin adding the extras for a 7-0 lead. Canada continued to dominate early territory and possession, and their pressure paid off when Mason Flesch powered over for a second try. While the conversion was missed, Canada stretched their advantage to 12-0.

The United States hit back through Fakaosifolau Pifeleti, whose try got his side on the scoreboard. The successful conversion cut the deficit to five points and injected fresh momentum into the contest.

Canada responded before halftime, with Luke Carty calmly slotting a penalty goal to give his side a 15-7 lead at the break.

The Americans returned with renewed intent in the second half, narrowing the margin through penalty goals as they chipped away at Canada’s advantage and kept the result in the balance.

However, Canada found the breakthrough they needed when Jesse Kilgour crossed for a crucial try, with the conversion extending the lead to 19-13. The USA added a late penalty to close within three points, but Canada held firm defensively in the closing stages to secure the win.

The victory not only earned Canada a third-place finish but is also expected to boost their position in the World Rugby rankings. Entering the playoff, Canada stood to climb at least two places with a win over their North American rivals, while the defeat is set to see the USA slip below Portugal in the rankings.
