The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued 8,483 traffic infringement notices against private and commercial vehicle operators found illegally providing public service vehicle (PSV) services between 2023 and October 20 this year.
LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer Makitalena Drova says the Authority will continue to tighten enforcement to ensure operators comply with Fiji’s transport laws and protect passengers using public transport services.
Ms Drova said the LTA carries out regular compliance checks and targeted joint operations with the Fiji Police Force to identify and penalise those providing PSV services without the necessary permits and licences.
In addition to infringement notices, the Authority has issued warnings and seized or impounded vehicles found operating illegally as PSVs.
Ms Drova said the LTA had also introduced showcause proceedings against individuals involved in illegal PSV operations, with further action to continue as part of its enforcement efforts.
She warned that unauthorised passenger transport services breach regulatory requirements designed to safeguard the public, stressing that passenger safety must remain a priority.
Operators found providing public transport services without the required permits or approvals may face action under the Land Transport Act and related regulations.
Depending on the nature and seriousness of the offence, penalties may include infringement notices, fines of up to $2,000, showcause summonses, vehicle impoundment and other regulatory measures allowed under the law.
The LTA says its continued enforcement efforts are aimed at ensuring PSV operators meet legal requirements and that passengers are protected when using transport services.
