A postpartum depression workshop has opened in Suva, with health officials calling for greater support for mothers experiencing mental health challenges after childbirth.

The workshop commenced today at Wesley Church Hall on Butt Street and was officially opened by Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Shashi Kiran.

Speaking at the event, Ministry of Health and Medical Services Acting Deputy Secretary for Public Health Services Dr Tevita Qoriniasi stressed that maternal mental health must be treated as a public health priority requiring support from families, communities and healthcare providers.

Dr Qoriniasi highlighted findings from the Voices of Mothers study, which found that one in three mothers in the Colonial War Memorial Hospital catchment area experience depressive symptoms, while one in eight show signs of probable depression.

He said financial hardship and a lack of daily support were among the strongest factors contributing to these challenges.

Dr Qoriniasi emphasised that postpartum depression is a health condition that requires understanding, compassion and appropriate care rather than stigma.

He also called on partners, family members and community leaders to work together to ensure mothers feel supported and valued during the transition to motherhood.

The Ministry of Health is strengthening healthcare approaches through its Maternal and Child Health Policy, with a focus on early identification and supportive care for mothers experiencing mental health difficulties.
