Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, has announced the appointment of Filipe Batiwale as the new Commissioner for the Online Safety Commission, effective immediately.
Batiwale is a senior lawyer with a current practicing certificate in Australia, specializing in commercial law, cyber law, and digital asset protection. Kamikamica says that with a strategic blend of experience gained from esteemed global and national law firms, Batiwale brings over seven years of experience in cyber law and digital asset protection, making him an invaluable addition to the Commission.
He adds that Batiwale’s expertise in online safety and his commitment to protecting the digital rights of all users will further the Commission’s mission to create a safer internet for everyone.
Batiwale is a seasoned lawyer with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Canterbury, which complements his practical knowledge in both commercial law and cyber law.
The new Commissioner says he looks forward to serving the people of Fiji and addressing the challenges we face in the online space.
He emphasizes that the growing prevalence of online harm underscores the importance of the Commission’s work, and there is much to be done to create safer digital environments.
Batiwale states that his focus will be on ensuring the Commission effectively fulfills its functions under the Online Safety Act, working collaboratively with stakeholders to promote accountability, education, and responsible online interactions.
