Today, a significant transition took place as the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) was officially handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways.
The formal handover ceremony was conducted by Ms. Laisa Bolalevu, Director of Monitoring at the Department of Public Enterprises, to Dr. Andrew Tukana, Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways.
Dr. Tukana emphasized the importance of BAF’s role in protecting Fiji’s unique biodiversity and its crucial contribution to safeguarding the nation’s agricultural and natural resources.
He expressed his enthusiasm for the transition and outlined the Ministry’s commitment to furthering these efforts.
“We are excited to work alongside BAF as we focus on enhancing our agricultural protection measures and ensuring the sustainability of our natural resources,” said Dr. Tukana.
The Cabinet approved the reorganization of the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji on January 21, 2025, with the aim of optimizing resource use, improving response strategies, fostering collaboration with stakeholders, and ensuring better accountability and leadership moving forward.
