The ‘Blue Economy’ is a crucial part of government’s efforts, to ensure a brighter future for the people of Fiji today and for our generations to come.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad highlighted this, while opening the “Fiji Blue Economy Workshop”, at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva this morning.

The DPM and Minister for Finance says the Blue Economy emphasises sustainable economic growth while also ensuring environmental and social sustainability, adding the two must be mutually inclusive.

He adds various Blue Economy initiatives, such as those in the Tourism Sector, the Fisheries Sector or moving towards Green Shipping all have the potential to sustainably contribute towards the economy.

Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change Dr Sivendra Michael reiterates that a thriving Blue Economy cannot exist without a healthy ocean.

During this two-day workshop, stakeholders will discuss and define our Blue Economy, identify existing efforts, address challenges, and spotlight opportunities that will unlock the potential of Fiji’s sustainable blue economy.
