The Nukuloa Dairy Farmers Group in Lutu, Wainibuka, received a significant boost to their operations last week with the handover of a new boat and engine, aimed at easing the transportation of milk to the nearest collection point.

The assistance was delivered by the Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu, who emphasized the importance of supporting rural farmers with practical tools to improve daily operations and market access.

“This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to empowering the agricultural community,” Rayalu said. “By providing essential equipment such as boats and engines, we hope to reduce transport burdens, enhance productivity, and improve the profitability of small-scale farmers.”

Dairy farmer Mitieli Tikoduadua, a 61-year-old resident of Nukuloa Village, expressed his gratitude during the handover ceremony. A lifelong dairy farmer, Mr. Tikoduadua reflected on the challenges faced by previous generations, including long treks carrying milk cans and transporting them on bamboo rafts.

“This support is deeply appreciated. It will help us focus more on farming and less on the challenges of transportation,” Mr. Tikoduadua said. “Our family and group have endured many hardships over the years, and this assistance brings hope for more efficient operations.”

The boat and engine are expected to benefit not only dairy farmers but also the wider community, including students who face difficulty accessing schools during periods of heavy rain and flooding.

According to Rayalu, the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s broader vision for sustainable agricultural development and community resilience. “Dairy farming plays a critical role in food security and the local economy. We are committed to working closely with farmers to provide the support they need to thrive,” he said.

Farmers present at the event echoed Mr. Tikoduadua’s appreciation, highlighting that such targeted support could significantly improve their livelihoods and encourage the next generation to continue the tradition of farming with renewed purpose.
