Fijians in the Western Division had their voices heard this week during a public consultation session for the 2025-2026 National Budget, held at Korovuto College Hall in Nadi.

The consultation, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, encouraged open dialogue between government officials and citizens. The event saw strong turnout from community leaders, farmers, business owners, and students – all eager to offer ideas and raise concerns.

“This is your budget. We are here to listen,” said DPM Prasad, as he reiterated the government’s commitment to inclusive policy-making.

Key issues raised included growing concerns around non-communicable diseases (NCDs), rising living costs, rural infrastructure, and youth unemployment. DPM Prasad reassured attendees that the government continues to invest in public health infrastructure and promote preventative health programmes.

There was also discussion around Fiji’s minimum wage increase to $5 per hour, and broader economic concerns such as brain drain and the need for more upskilling initiatives. Concerns over deteriorating rural roads – particularly in Tunalia – highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades, especially for school transportation.

DPM Prasad pointed to the government’s efforts to stabilise the economy, noting the benefits of recent fiscal reforms. “We had to make tough decisions, but now we are seeing the results – stronger revenue, reduced debt, and better services,” he said.

He acknowledged that while not every concern can be addressed immediately, public input is critical in shaping budget decisions. “This is real democracy – when people are free to speak, to question, and to help shape government policy,” he added.

The Korovuto consultation is part of a national series of meetings in the lead-up to the 2025–2026 budget, set to be tabled on June 27.

📍 Next Stop: The public is invited to the next consultation at the Girmit Centre in Lautoka on Wednesday, April 23, from 6pm to 8pm.
