Narsaiya Naidu Chetty has been recognised as Fiji’s 2026 Goat Farmer of the Year after nearly three decades of dedication to livestock farming at Nuku Estate in Cakaudrove.
The 52-year-old owner of Naidus Goat Farm began farming 29 years ago with the aim of building a sustainable income from the land. His 100-acre freehold property now supports goats, sheep, ducks and free-range chickens, contributing to employment, food security and agricultural development in the community.
The farm currently has 130 goats, 37 Fiji Fantastic sheep, 69 ducks and 98 free-range chickens, with livestock valued at more than $54,500. The operation also includes farm sheds, a dwelling house and equipment, with buildings valued at approximately $132,000 and a three-ton truck worth about $90,000.
Mr Chetty has continued expanding the business by reinvesting farm earnings into its development. Assistance from the Ministry in 2021–2022, through the provision of a goat shed, also helped improve farm infrastructure, fencing and livestock management.
Despite its growth, the farm faces challenges, particularly a shortage of pasture to feed the increasing livestock population. Mr Chetty is addressing this through the establishment of Juncao grass to improve fodder supply, while fencing construction and repairs remain important priorities.
Farm manager Aminiasi Katonivualiku oversees daily operations and has played a key role in the farm’s continued progress. Detailed records of livestock numbers, sales, drenching and mortality are also maintained to monitor farm performance.
Beyond his own business, Mr Chetty supports the wider farming community by sharing breeding stock and practical knowledge with aspiring livestock farmers. He has also helped several farmers establish their own goat farming ventures.
His recognition at the 2026 National Agriculture Show in Labasa highlights his long-term commitment to livestock farming, sound farm management and the development of Fiji’s agricultural sector.
