The Climate Change Act 2021 will only be effective if it is fully understood and put into action by all sectors of society, Director of Climate Change Ms Senivasa Waqairamasi says.

Speaking at the opening of the Mandatory Socialisation of the Climate Change Act 2021 Talanoa in Labasa on 19 May, Ms Waqairamasi described the legislation as a major achievement for both Fiji and the Pacific, reinforcing the country’s commitment to tackling climate change.

She said the Act establishes the legal and institutional foundation needed to coordinate climate action nationwide, involving government bodies, municipal councils, communities, development partners, civil society groups, academics, the private sector and individuals.

The week-long programme, organised by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change through the Department of Climate Change, has brought together representatives from various sectors across the Northern Division.

Ms Waqairamasi said the legislation strengthens Fiji’s ability to respond to climate-related challenges, improve access to climate financing, and support adaptation and mitigation initiatives.

She also highlighted the Northern Division’s vulnerability to issues such as coastal erosion, risks to agriculture, and damage to ecosystems and infrastructure caused by climate impacts.

The Talanoa Dialogue marks the beginning of a series of climate-focused programmes planned for the North, including community dialogue sessions, proposal development workshops, learning visits to relocation sites, and consultations on Fiji’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution Costed Implementation Plan.

Ms Waqairamasi encouraged stakeholders to work together in developing practical and community-driven climate solutions to build resilience across the Northern Division.
