A retaining wall of a construction site near Nepani collapsed early this morning, causing damage to nearby residential areas, including a vehicle.

The incident occurred around 2 am with the loud bang waking up nearby residents.

Kunal Chand, who had purchased his car in March this year, was shocked to find it buried under the debris.

He has been living in this resident for a year now.

He says, he never imagined the incident would instantly destroy his car.

“I recently got this car, its actually my first car. It was totally unexpected. I Usually return from work late night, and I usually park at that exact spot. I never really thought that this would happen. I was never prepared for this”, he said.

“I was in a shock when I came out and saw it buried under the debris,” he said.

The collapse affected at least two other families in the area, as the wall fell dangerously close to their homes.

Chand expressed frustration at the construction company, questioning how it continues to operate after such an incident.

The Construction Company says the collapse was caused due to heavy rain last night, and quote ‘It is a Construction site, and works are still in progress”.

The workers was seen removing the Construction Signage from the front of the property, when Fiji One News arrived at the scene.

“Before construction of such development, they should consider the safety of the nearby residents. Proper assessments should also be carried to ensure the safety of the surrounding”, Chand said.

Chand has asked the construction company to provide him with a temporary vehicle for transport, but was advised to rely on his insurance.

“This morning I spoke with the construction owner, they asked me if I can claim the insurance that my car is on, instead of claiming theirs, as they have a property insurance as well which will take time”, he said.

“I had requested for a temporary vehicle so that I can at least travel with it to work, they simply denied”, he added.

Residents are now calling for stricter oversight on construction projects near residential areas, urging authorities to prevent further incidents like this one.

Fiji One News has sent questions to the Ministry of Local Government, including the local council, and is awaiting their response.
