Energy Fiji Limited has confirmed that proposed power rationing measures have been deferred following the approval of an interim electricity fuel surcharge by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The interim fuel surcharge, which takes effect from today, adds 5.91 cents per kilowatt-hour across electricity customer categories and is aimed at helping offset rising global fuel costs impacting Fiji’s power sector.

EFL says the surcharge represents only a partial recovery of the extraordinary increase in international fuel prices, as the country continues to rely on imported fuel for between 45 to 50 percent of electricity generation. The company says dry weather conditions and growing electricity demand have increased the need for thermal power generation despite Fiji’s ongoing transition toward renewable energy.

The utility provider acknowledged the support of Government and the FCCC in helping maintain the stability and sustainability of Fiji’s electricity supply during a period of global fuel price volatility and geopolitical uncertainty.

EFL has also confirmed that controlled load shedding and power rationing, which were expected to begin from 1 June under its Operational Response Framework, will now be deferred while fuel supply conditions, hydrology levels, and overall system stability continue to be monitored.

The Government subsidy for qualifying low-income households consuming up to 100 kilowatt-hours per month will remain in place, including support for eligible lifeline customers and qualifying MSMEs.

Chief Executive Officer Fatiaki Gibson is urging all customers to conserve electricity, saying every unit of energy saved helps reduce fuel usage, lower electricity generation costs, and strengthen national energy security.

EFL says while the immediate threat of power rationing has eased, energy conservation remains a shared national responsibility as Fiji navigates ongoing global fuel challenges.
