Fiji and China are exploring stronger cooperation on waste management and environmental protection as Fiji works to address growing rubbish and disposal challenges across communities.
During a meeting with Chinese Embassy Charge d’affaires Wang Yuan, Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya said the Government was progressing work on its Integrated National Waste Management Strategy, which is expected to be submitted to Cabinet soon.
The Minister said Fiji was interested in learning from China’s experience in handling waste management in densely populated, rural and island communities.
She also highlighted ongoing local initiatives, including school waste programmes, composting projects and the use of trashbooms to stop rubbish from entering waterways.
Mr Yuan reaffirmed China’s support for Fiji through technical training, climate cooperation and environmental initiatives, including resilience-building programmes and renewable energy development.
Discussions also covered climate collaboration ahead of this year’s pre-COP meeting, with both sides exploring opportunities in offshore wind, tidal energy and other climate-smart technologies.
