The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, discipline, and security following the dismissal of five correction officers who tested positive for illicit substances during recent random drug testing. This action comes under the FCS’s strict zero-tolerance policy on drug use.
Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, emphasized the importance of maintaining high professional standards within correctional facilities, stating:
“The Fiji Corrections Service remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, discipline, and security within all correctional institutions nationwide. To strengthen security and minimize the infiltration of drugs and contraband, the FCS has implemented a series of robust measures, including random officer searches and drug testing.”
The dismissed officers were identified through an unannounced drug testing initiative aimed at ensuring that those tasked with enforcing the law also uphold it. The FCS has pledged to continue conducting regular and surprise drug tests and searches to maintain compliance with its strict internal regulations.
This decisive action reflects the FCS’s dedication to creating a safe, secure, and drug-free environment for both officers and inmates. Correction officers are reminded of their duty to set a strong example through ethical conduct and unwavering discipline.
The FCS calls on all staff to adhere to these principles, reinforcing public confidence in the integrity of Fiji’s correctional institutions.
