After a nine-year drought, the Fiji Men’s National 7s team claimed the HSBC Dubai 7s title by defeating Spain 19-5 in the final, marking their first victory in Dubai since 2015. The win also ended a 22-tournament drought for Fiji.

In a tightly contested match, Spain put up a strong fight in the first half, with Pol Pla scoring the opening try to give Spain a 5-0 lead.

However, Fiji responded quickly with Filipe Sauturaga scoring their first try before half time, followed by Jeremaia Matana within the first few minutes of the second half and Ilikimi Vunaki crossing the line in the second half to seal the win.

In 2015, Osea Kolinisau, now the team’s coach, led the side to a 28-17 win over England.

Sauturaga was named HSBC Player of the Match for his performance.

Kolinisau, reflecting on the victory, credited the team’s hard work and consistency.

“Hard work always pays off,” said the coach.

This is a strong start to Kolinisau’s coaching tenure, following a silver medal in Paris and a four-year contract extension.

This victory at the opening stage of the World Sevens Series sets a promising tone for the season ahead.
