Fiji faces drug surge; students caught in crossfire

Drug-related arrests and seizures persisted across Fiji’s five policing divisions in the past week. 

Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu highlighted the Fiji Detector Dog Unit’s involvement in drug operations in the Northern Division. 

Raids and snap traffic checks, aided by public tip-offs, yielded positive outcomes in Nabouwalu, Labasa, Taveuni, Seaqaqa and Savusavu, resulting in arrests and seizures for unlawful drug cultivation and possession. 

Seizures included dried leaves believed to be marijuana, found on school premises in Nausori and white substances suspected to be cocaine discovered at another school in Lautoka. 

The first involv​ed a 17-year-old student who was found with dried leaves believed to be marijuana on school premises. The matter is being investigated by Nausori Police.

In Lautoka, white substances believed to be cocaine were found on another school premises allegedly belonging to a 17-year-old student. The substances have been sent for analysis.

These substances have been sent for analysis. ACP Driu urged parents to discuss the dangers of drug use with their children and emphasised the importance of ongoing education about its consequences. 

Despite efforts from law enforcement and stakeholders, parental reinforcement of this message at home is important . 

ACP Driu acknowledged an uptick in public cooperation with authorities and encouraged individuals to report criminal activities via Crime Stoppers or contact their respective Divisional Police Commanders.
