Fiji’s mineral resources and mining sector is poised for significant growth this year, especially for gold production indicated by mandated reports from mining companies.

This has been revealed by the Director of Mineral Resources Department, Dr. Apete Soro.

Dr Soro says these reports have also shown the two operating gold mines are going to increase production being Vatukoula Gold Mine PLC and the newly commissioned Tuvatu Gold Mine.

He says despite technical challenges stemming from aging infrastructure and machinery at Vatukoula Gold Mine PLC, collaborative efforts within the industry have tackled these issues.

This includes upgrading to a new Dolphin shaft, enhancing mining methods and designs, and procuring ore vehicles for underground loading and offloading.

Dr Soro says the Tuvatu gold mine is also expected to increase gold production by mid-year after they complete the development drive, to improve access of mineable high-grade ores.

He says as the Mirenal Resources Department and the Department of Environment ensure that mining operations are conducted in a sustainable manner, both Ministries are working together to best address the challenges faced by mining or mineral exploration investors.

Soro says they will also work together to improve services regarding implementation of Environment Management Plan or Environment Impact Assessment in respect of its level and phase of mineral development, be it mineral exploration or mining.

According to Dr. Soro, the Department continues to receive interests for mineral explorations from local and overseas investors which clearly shows the high demand for mining in Fiji.

He adds, the Ministry is currently working towards filling the position of the Mining Engineer using the Civil Service Recruitment and Selection Guideline with the appointment expected to be made soon.
