In a landmark move to improve urban waste management, the Government of Fiji, through the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, signed a Transaction Advisory Services Agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on February 4, 2025.

The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Local Government in Suva, marks a significant milestone in Fiji’s efforts to tackle waste management challenges in the Western Division. The agreement will support the development of an efficient and sustainable waste management system, potentially including the construction of a sanitary landfill and the rehabilitation of four open dumpsites located in Sigatoka, Lautoka, Ba, and Rakiraki.

The project will be implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with the Ministry of Local Government collaborating closely with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. This strategic partnership aims to enhance waste management infrastructure, promote environmental sustainability, and improve public health outcomes in the Western Division.

Officials highlighted that this initiative aligns with Fiji’s broader environmental goals, focusing on reducing pollution, managing waste more effectively, and fostering sustainable development.

The Government of Fiji and ADB reaffirmed their commitment to advancing environmental resilience and sustainable urban development through innovative and collaborative approaches.
