Fijians in New Caledonia in close association; plans for repatriation underway.

Fijians in New Caledonia have shown resilience, following the recent tension in the capital Noumea.

Around fourty Fijian families currently live in Noumea, and a recent Police raid on Monday left many terrified and shocked after the experience.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka told Fiji One News that talks are underway to safely repatriate Fijians, through the help of the Australian government under the ‘Vuvale Partnership’. Australia however has already sent 300 of her citizens, to Brisbane overnight.

A Police raid that happened on Monday left many families terrified, including Billy Cava’s family, who are orginally from Naivilaca in Noco, Rewa.

He says, this was the first time for many Fijian families to experience such an event.

Co-Coordinator of the Pacific Network on Globalisation Joey Tau supports the Pacific Regional Non-Governmental Organizations (PRNGOs) Alliance, on their call for the Pacific Leaders to send in a neutral mission to oversee and mediate dialogue between all parties.

Over 40 Fijian families currently live in Noumea, where the unrest broke out.

Cava says the families are in close association.

Responding to Fiji One News, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says they are in talks with Australia and New Zealand regarding repatriation.

He says, government is doing all they can to ensure Fijians in Noumea are safe.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Australia completed their first batch of repatriation from New Caledonia, after the Federal Government received permission to send two military transport planes to pick up the first of the evacuees.
