Fijians are being urged to remain calm and not allow misinformation, religious differences or political rhetoric to create division following the presentation of the Constitutional Review Commission’s report and recommendations.

The Commission has completed its work and presented its recommendations, which will now be considered by Cabinet before any decision is made on the way forward.

Particular concern has emerged over a recommendation relating to Fiji’s status as a secular state.

However, it has been stressed that the Commission’s proposals remain recommendations and are not decisions of Government.

Addressing concerns surrounding religion, the statement emphasised that declaring Fiji a Christian state is not what makes the country Christian, saying Christianity should instead be reflected through humility, kindness, compassion, hard work, service and love for one another.

It also stressed that Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and people of other faiths must never feel that their religion, freedom or place in Fiji is under threat.

“Their right to practise their faith freely must always be respected and protected.”

Political leaders are also being urged to exercise responsibility when commenting on the recommendations and to avoid turning the national discussion into a political, racial or religious battle.

Concern has also been raised over commentary from anonymous social media accounts and online trolls allegedly attempting to create anger, fear and panic.

Fijians are being encouraged not to allow misinformation or inflammatory rhetoric to divide the country.

Cabinet will carefully consider the Commission’s recommendations, with some potentially receiving support, others rejected and some requiring further consideration.

The statement concluded with a reference to 1 Corinthians 16:14: “Let all that you do be done in love,” calling for the same spirit to guide the national discussion on the recommendations.
