The President of the Republic of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, formally received the Letters of Credence from the new Non-Resident Ambassador of Finland to Fiji, His Excellency Arto Haapea, at the State House today.
President Lalabalavu congratulated Ambassador Haapea on his appointment and, on behalf of the Government and the people of Fiji, wished him success in his diplomatic tenure. He expressed Fiji’s interest in strengthening bilateral relations with Finland in areas of shared priority, particularly climate resilience and sustainable development.
During their meeting, President Lalabalavu reiterated Fiji’s commitment to rebuilding from global challenges, such as climate change, and acknowledged the existing cooperation between the two countries through multilateral platforms, including United Nations peacekeeping.
Ambassador Haapea conveyed Finland’s interest in enhancing economic cooperation with Fiji and supporting local development initiatives. He brings extensive experience from his previous roles in the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, including as Director of the Unit for East and Southeast Asia and Oceania, as well as diplomatic postings in India and China.
Ambassador Haapea inspected a 30-member Guard of Honour by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, led by Lieutenant David Nainima, and was accompanied by Honorary Aide-de-Camp Captain Robert Curuqara for the formal ceremony.
