The Fiji National University has strengthened its research framework with the Fiji Institute of Pacific Health Research (FIPHR) officially transitioning from the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences to the University’s Research Office after seven years of operation.
The move, effective from 1 June 2026, aligns with FNU’s vision of enhancing research leadership and fostering research excellence across all academic disciplines. It also places FIPHR at the centre of the University’s research network as part of a broader strategy to establish and strengthen research institutes throughout FNU’s five Colleges.
As part of the transition, FIPHR founding Director Dr Donald Wilson has been appointed Acting Executive Director Research and Innovation, with responsibility for advancing research initiatives across the University.
FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba described FIPHR as one of the University’s notable success stories, highlighting its growth from a College-based research unit into a leading Pacific research institute with a strong impact on communities, health policy and regional partnerships.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation Professor Paul Ade Iji said the transition marks the first phase of a wider research expansion plan, noting that FIPHR’s established model of community-focused, externally funded and partnership-driven research will serve as a blueprint for future institutes across other Colleges.
Dr Wilson assured stakeholders that the transition would not affect ongoing projects, donor agreements or research partnerships, with all existing research activities continuing without interruption.
