Fiji will hold Girmit celebrations, marking the 145th anniversary of the arrival of indentured labourers from India, from May 10 to May 13.

The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs said the main event is scheduled to be held at the Lautoka Girmit Multicultural Centre where the celebrations “will honor and appreciate the invaluable contributions of the Girmit indentured laborers that paved the social and development of Fiji.”

With the theme “Journey of Girmit Descendants in Building a New Fiji,” this year’s celebration aims to reflect on the enduring legacy of resilience and diversity within the Fijian society.

On Friday May 10, a program has been organized to celebrate the relationship of the Girmityas with the Vanua for past century and half.

The program will provide an opportunity for all Fijians to indulge in a wide range of food from various stalls and enjoy free entertainment, games, and amusements for children throughout the event.

Additionally, exhibition booths from government stakeholders, private sector, and the Indian High Commission will showcase products linked with the Girmitiyas and their descendants.

Museum and Archive booths will provide a look into the history and an opportunity to trace ancestry for descendants.

The official program begins on Saturday May 11 at 8am, with a range of activities that will continue until 3pm. Evening festivities will be held from 7:30 pm to 10pm, featuring cultural performances and entertainment.

Day two of the celebration, on Sunday May 12, will begin with church services at 10am, followed by entertainment and folk songs until 3pm. Evening activities are scheduled from 7pm to 10:30pm, offering further opportunities for cultural immersion and celebration.

President Ratu Williame Katonivere will officiate on Monday, May 13 at 8.30am which will begin with a float procession and march from Shirley Park to the Girmit Centre in Lautoka, symbolizing the journey and perseverance of the Girmit descendants.

A similar event is scheduled for Labasa on May 11 at Subrail Park from 2pm to 5pm, featuring cultural performances and folk dances.
