The Government is intensifying efforts to boost domestic rice production as part of a broader strategy to reduce Fiji’s reliance on imported rice and strengthen national food security.
Speaking in Parliament last week, Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Tomasi Tunabuna said Fiji remains exposed to fluctuations in international markets due to its dependence on imported rice, particularly as rising global oil prices continue to increase food and freight costs.
To address the challenge, the Ministry of Agriculture is rolling out measures aimed at expanding rice cultivation, including the distribution of improved seed varieties, greater mechanisation support for farmers, upgrades to rice milling facilities and initiatives to attract more farmers and young people into the sector.
The programme is expected to reduce import costs, conserve foreign exchange and create new economic opportunities in rural communities through increased agricultural activity.
Tunabuna said strengthening local rice production would also improve Fiji’s ability to withstand global market disruptions while ensuring a more stable supply of a key food staple for households nationwide.
