Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Fiji’s justice sector reforms during a courtesy visit by the Ambassador of Japan to Fiji, Hiroshi Tajima, to the Ministry of Justice.
The ambassador was accompanied by the Embassy of Japan’s Head of Protocol, Ms. Kotani, and was received by Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga, along with Permanent Secretary for Justice and Acting Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Social Protection Selina Kuruleca.
Senior representatives from the Ministry of Justice, Fiji Corrections Service, Fiji Public Trustees Pte Ltd, the Office of the Official Receiver and the Registrar General’s Office also attended the meeting.
Discussions centred on the long-standing cooperation between Fiji and Japan in the justice sector, including progress made under the Memorandum of Cooperation signed by the two countries’ justice ministries in Japan last year.
The talks also reviewed Fiji’s involvement in Strategic Dialogue and Joint Study initiatives, as well as Japan’s support for institutional development and capacity-building programmes.
Turaga and Kuruleca provided updates on the Law and Justice Sector Reform Roadmap and acknowledged Japan’s contributions over the past two years in strengthening reforms and improving justice services.
The Ministry of Justice expressed its gratitude to the Government of Japan for its continued partnership and said it looks forward to further collaboration aimed at building a modern, accessible and effective justice system for all Fijians.
