Justice Minister stresses importance of standards and processes by which people are added to Police Blacklist

Justice Siromi Turaga has emphasised the importance to conduct thorough examination of the standards and processes by which people are added to the Police Blacklist.

Turaga in meeting the Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew highlighted the meeting was to ensure the procedure is open, equitable and just.

It was also emphasised on how crucial it is for the public and the police to communicate clearly. There will be an attempt to raise public knowledge of the consequences of being placed on the blacklist as well as the channels through which one can request a review.

The Minister for Justice and the Acting Commissioner of Police reiterated their dedication to guaranteeing that Fiji’s legal system functions with impartiality, equity, and dignity for every person.

They also recognised the value of community trust and its significance for efficient law enforcement and national security.
At the end of the meeting, it was decided a working group will be formulated to create policy proposals for enhancing the current system.

This will made up of representatives from the Fiji Police Force, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the office of the Solicitor General.
