The Fiji Girmit Council will stage this year’s Girmit Day celebrations in Nadi, bringing together families and communities to reflect on the history, traditions, and legacy of the Girmitiyas.
The event is scheduled for 14 May at the Nadi Civic Centre from 7pm and will showcase a variety of cultural items, including traditional music, dance performances, poetry recitals, and Girmit-themed dramas presented by women’s groups.
Lautoka Girmit Centre Manager Selwa Nandan said the celebrations have usually been held in Lautoka, however shifting the event to Nadi this year is aimed at giving more people the opportunity to participate.
A major feature of the programme will be the acknowledgement of about 20 elderly descendants of Girmitiyas, most of whom are from the Nadi area, in recognition of their service and contribution to the development of Fiji. Many of the recipients are aged above 80 years.
Mr. Nandan said the occasion also serves as a reminder for younger generations to value their heritage and honour the sacrifices made by their elders.
Members of the public are being encouraged to attend the event and join in commemorating the resilience and enduring spirit of the Girmitiyas.
